Here are some things that I wish I would have known or done my freshman year.
Dear College Freshman Self,
First off, call your parents. It’s not lame or stupid or baby of you to miss home and to want to call your parents. Do it. Call them. Your parents miss you and they love you it’s the least you can do to call them every once in awhile. Mom will ask about school and your grades and Dad will make sure your not drinking and sleeping your life away. They want to know everything that’s going on and how you’re adjusting. I mean they’re paying for it (sometimes) so it’s good to give them the deets. You’ll find yourself missing them more and more as the years go by but you’ll also find yourself figuring out how to live without them.
Next, get involved! Find your niche. College is about figuring out who you are. In college it’s okay (its actually cool) to be different and unique. Whether it’s a sorority or fraternity or it’s the chess club, figure out what makes you happy and pour yourself into it. Forget all the stereotypes of everything and just focus on what makes you happy. 9 times out of 10 that organization will come with your closest friends and you’ll wish you could have joined sooner. Being involved means you have less time to sit in your dorm and miss home. I’m telling you, it’ll drive you insane and you will be miserable.
Say yes. Whether it’s to a study group or a party say yes! When a friend calls you up to go to the movies or go to a campus event say yes! Don’t just sit in your dorm room and watch Netflix (only every now and then) go out and be a part college and experience life cause once you hit senior year you’ll be wishing you spent more time out with friends and less on your bed. With saying yes comes responsibilities. Don’t get me wrong if you have your chem final at 8 am the next morning I don’t think hitting up big ass glass night the night before is such a good idea. Saying yes will leave you with a ton of memories to look back on and stories to tell.
Study hard. Remember why you are at college. The first year is the most important for your GPA. (I know I know who cares right?) WRONG. You will care about it and you should care about it. Future employers are not going to go through and see that you made an A in one class and be so proud of you. They are going to see what GPA you graduated with. So start off this four-year (sometimes more am I right super seniors) journey with the right grades. We all know the saying Ds equal degree. It might get you a degree but will it get you a career? Trust me raising that 2.2 from freshman to senior year is real hard even with making A’s and B’s. Don’t just study hard study smart. Cramming will happen no matter what. Try not to focus so much on cramming. Study two to three weeks in advance, 30 minutes a day or twice a week will make a huge difference. You’ll thank me later.
Take chances. Take chances and try to get the most out of these four years. They will be gone in a blink of an eye. See a cute boy at the library, go up and talk to him the worst that’s going to happen is what he doesn't talk back.... (Now that’s just rude) Wear that super cute top you just bought but you think its a little outside your comfort zone. Chances are you are totally going to rock it. Life if full of so many great things so don't miss out on them just because you're afraid.
Don't forget who you are. With all of this that I've said it is so important for you not to forget about who you really are and where you came from. Remember the girl/boy that your parents raised and never strive to be anything less of that. Don't dumb yourself down or not stand up for what you believe in for someone else. Be strong in your morals and your faith and don't let anyone stand in the way of that. You will be much happier and so much better off if you do this.
After all of this remember why you are in college. You will gain best friends and so many memories from this journey. You will fall in love and be heartbroken. You will be stressed out and also have the time of your life. College is the best times of your life so do as much as you can in these short four years. Time is going to fly by and you be sitting at graduation looking back at everything wondering where did all the time go? Enjoy it while it’s here.
Sincerely,
College Senior Self
